This Municipality was constituted during the year 1957 as NAC vide G.O. No.3022/LSG dt.14.8.1957 and thereafter upgraded into Municipality vide G.O.No.10185/UD dt.13.11.1969 with the following 10 revenue villages:-
1) Nalda
2) Belkundi
3) Karakolha
4) Sedding
5) Barbil
6) Sundara
7) Matkambeda
8) Santabahal
9) Matiaposi
10) Dalki
The total area of this Municipality is 45.89 Sq. Kms. There are 15 wards in this Municipality. The total population of the Municipality is 66,540 out of which 34,938 are male and 31,602 are female as per 2011 Census.

BOUNDARY This Municipality is bounded by the following boundaries
East:- Thakurani.
West:- Ulibur, Nimtur.
South: - Kasia, Serenda and Balagoda.
North:- Singhbhum (Jharkhand State).

CHARGES::- Sri Laxman Mahanta is functioning as Chairperson of Barbil Municipality from 30.03.2022 and Smt. Saraswati Naik is functioning as Vice-Chairperson since 07.04.2022. Sri Ramesh Chandra Nayak is functioning as Executive Officer since 21.10.2024.
